Each year hundreds of local, state and federal agencies, businesses, and private foundations partner with the Foundation to engage San José State University faculty in sponsored research programs, public service and community projects, consulting, and other specialized educational activities. The Foundation also receives charitable contributions on behalf of SJSU, in the form of gifts, property, endowments, trusts and bequests.

A 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, the SJSU Foundation provides a more flexible, entrepreneurial framework through which the campus carries out specialized instructional and service activities not normally provided for by the state budget, while also eliminating undue governmental, budgetary, procurement, and other state fiscal restrictions.
